'Three sustainable innovations'

The FIM Innovation Project Motonext of Ten Kate Racing, Project 1 and Putoline Oil as a partner is a prime example of how motorsport continues to be the most efficient testing ground in the world. During the WorldSBK event in Assen, the partners showcased three innovative technologies that are not only significant for motorsport but also for future transportation and industrial applications. These sustainable innovations are paving the way for a better tomorrow.

Recap
The Motonext project is an initiative of Ten Kate Racing from Nieuwleusen and the German Project 1. Both organizations feel responsible for the sustainability of mobility in general. From an environmental and economic point of view, it is not feasible to replace the current means of transportation all at once: a transition period is necessary.
Motonext shows that there are already possibilities to make mobility and motorsports more sustainable. Through its partners, the global Motonext project has all the resources to investigate, test, and prove that sustainable results can be achieved in (auto and) motorsports in the short term. This contributes to the sustainability of motorsports and mobility in general.

Barcelona 2022 - Phase 1: 'A momentous occasion'
A focus on sustainability: Ten Kate Racing incorporate green solutions on their bikes.

It was a successful Catalunya Round for Ten Kate Racing in the FIM Supersport World Championship at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, both on-track and off-track. There was a significant development on Dominique's Yamaha YZF-R6 machine courtesy of a green solution to the fairing parts made out of bio flax as part of a sustainability drive. The special liveries in Spain marked the momentous occasion with green featuring prominently on both the bike and leathers.

The parts made out of bio flax were the second-generation development. While it retains almost the same properties as carbon, carbon dioxide emissions during the production of the parts were reduced by more than 90%. A third fairing is currently in development, intending to increase the natural base product to 50% in the resin.

Ten Kate Racing has been working with several partners and stakeholders to develop a green solution as they look to continue their sustainability drive by working with the Dutch national motorsport federation, the FIM, Yamaha, Pirelli, fuel developers and the team's technical oil partner Putoline Oil

Ronald Ten Kate Ten Kate Racing Team Principal added:
“18 months ago, I was initially sceptical about a sustainability project in motorsport. One thing, sustainability, seems to exclude the other, motorsport. Nothing could be further from the truth; it is now abundantly clear to me that motorsport can only survive by being actively involved in this. Not only is it good for the image of our sport, but we can play an active role in the future of mobility.”

Ignacio Verneda, Deputy President of the FIM, said:
“As the FIM, we have been concerned with the development and implementation of sustainability in motorsport for many years. The FIM was the first sports organisation to address the environment for 30 years. Three years later, a sustainability committee was already formed. That motorsport is the platform to explore issues such as innovation and sustainability is more and more obvious to everyone. Ten Kate’s Motonext project is an official FIM Innovation project, which fits in perfectly with our policy. We are regularly informed about the project and are very curious about its results.”

Assen 2023 - Phase 2: 'Buzzing with excitement'
Ten Kate Racing, alongside Project 1 and its partner Putoline Oil, has presented a 'world's first' during the third round of the WorldSBK Championship, held in Assen from 21–23 April. This international premiere is a direct outcome of the FIM Innovation Project and has positive implications for sustainable motorsports.

Less oil consumption
The FIM Innovation Project Motonext by Ten Kate Racing and Project 1 proves that motorsport is once again the fastest laboratory in the world. On the eve of the WorldSBK event in Assen, Motonext presented three sustainable innovations to which we, as Putoline Oil, contribute strongly in one of them. By exploring options for reducing oil consumption, as one of our research pillars, we can majorly impact the oil's lifecycle.

Engine Oil Reco Unit
Putoline and Ten Kate Racing have developed the so-called Engine Oil Reco Unit in the Motonext project. This ingenious device gives oil a second life. After a training or race day, the oil does not have to be disposed to be destroyed. After cleaning, the oil can be directly reused again. The oil used during the WorldSBK race weekend in the Supersport bikes of Ten Kate Racing, for example, can be used again the next day at the Yamaha R3 Cup.

Our challenge was reducing motorcycle engine oil consumption at Ten Kate Racing. By using it longer, we ultimately achieved one significant environmental saving. We designed a reconditioning unit that finely filters the product over a more extended period.

The machine's components exist of:

  • A 50-micron filtration element.
  • A 60 L storage tank of race-used motorcycle engine oil.
  • A fluid pump.
  • A two-micron absolute microfilter,

The strength of the machine lies in making the cleaner that it originally, which is simply amazing.

Hard work pays off
Since the beginning, Putoline Oil has always been driven by technology and innovation. The fact that we are at the forefront of sustainable developments in motorsport and mobility in general as partners of the Motonext project makes us proud and gives a performance boost to the entire team.

We are involved in exciting sustainability developments, and if you have been paying attention, you may have noticed several spoilers being dropped already. We continue to innovate and are certainly not sitting still!

Did you know?!
When we delivered our Reco Unit at Ten Kate Racing, we left a nice present for our successful collaboration: an oil cabin in a unique wrap, which has undoubtedly received a nice place within the workshop.
